A white man and a black woman discover the depth of their differences, and an unexpected bond, in this urban drama.
Edmund, long-divorced and lonely, offers shelter to Careese, who is temporarily homeless. Good intentions on both sides give way to mutual distrust and resentment, but what begins as a clash of language and culture turns into something else entirely.
Told in the two distinct voices of its protagonists, this novel cuts to the bone in dissecting Edmund’s and Careese’s hidden prejudices, faults and strengths. As their attitudes change, their seemingly simple story becomes a complex exploration of America’s unhealed wound.

Michael Laser manages to give just the right amount of detail to make the characters realistic, without overwhelming with tons and tons of what I often consider pointless details that just make so many novels so darn looooong! And he always comes up with just the right details--that seem a little surprising but not too surprising--to deepen each character. I also like that the story doesn't have a pat "they lived happily ever after" kind of ending. The two protagonists seem like real people in a totally true-to-life situation. I really felt for them and enjoyed being in their world for a certain amount of time each day. I was sorry when the novel ended, even though it seemed to end at just the right moment.Product details

Dark Light A Love Story edition by Michael Laser Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Once I got past the notion that a 46-year-old, stiff, white man would let a black woman living on the street, move into his home, give her a set of keys and leave her unattended, the book was good. The writing was very detailed, the characters well developed and the story flowed well. Furthermore, what made this book great was that it had a more realistic ending than one often finds in romance. Spoiler alert, Spoiler alert The much older white man and the alcoholic black woman don't live happily ever after...at least not with each other. The other ending would not have been real.
A page-turner. Story deals with race, culture, poverty & love. Well done.
I really enjoyed reading Michael Laser's new novel, Dark & Light. The characters grew in depth and dimension as the tale unfolded. I like the way the story was told in the voices of the protagonists, and I found the story very believable and compelling. Laser writes with restraint and intensity. I highly recommend this novel to others.
What I liked the most about this book and what made it memorable for me was that I didn't feel like I was reading the same cliche love story with rehashed versions of the same two characters that appear in most "formula" love stories. This is a portrayal of two people who seem real and have serious issues and flaws, which to me makes them interesting and gives them dimension. The book pulls you in from the beginning because you can immediately imagine at least two ways in which the relationship between the main characters might resolve -- true love or complete disaster. However, the ending is still surprising. Overall, a compelling and very interesting book.
Dark & Light works like a piece of chamber music and is a great read. Most of it takes place on the Upper West Side of New York City in the mid-1990s, when some people still smoked in offices, used subway tokens, and were just beginning to use the Internet. While a relationship between a divorced, older white computer programmer and a homeless, younger African American woman at that time may sound unlikely, Michael Laser makes it convincing and compelling, intelligently touching on issues of class, race, generosity, failure, and a person's ability to change. As Edmund and Careese struggle to come to terms with their hopes for the future, their feelings about each other and the consequences of their actions before they met, Laser uses wonderfully written internal monologues to shed light on their personalities and move the action forward. Dark & Light captures the mystery, complexity and ambivalence of two very different, well-realized characters. Bravo!
I must admit reading Dark and Light made me uncomfortable. However, I was uncomfortable in a good way. Laser made his characters as well as the situations that they were involved in realistic. To be able to see what each character felt and thought through the personal way Laser wrote their points of view was at times (a lot of times) touching and once again, uncomfortable. What I mean by uncomfortable is that their feelings for each other throughout the novel were uneven. But in real life, that is most often the case. In many romance novels the two protaganists feel torrid passion for each other in equal quantities. However, in Dark and Light, Edmund and Careese's affections for each other grew at a natural uneven pace until eventually both of their feelings were almost equal.
I applaud Laser for his realistic depiction of romance while also addressing important issues with just the right amount of intensity. At some moments while reading the novel, I was pleasantly surprised that Laser took a certain situation to a level that was unexpected but real. I know that doesn't make sense right now but when you read Dark and Light you'll understand where I'm coming from.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is sick of the hackneyed cliche of two people falling instantly in love and living happily ever after.
I was pleasantly taken in by Mike Laser's writing style. As another reader noted, he has just enough detail to make you really care about the main characters. He has a very flowing style, the story moves quickly- yet it it is very intelligent writing and thought provoking material. Looking forward to more books by this talented writer. I highly recommend the book.
